In order to become a Mason you must meet certain minimum requirements:
- Be a man at least 18 years of age
- Be of good moral character
- A Belief in God
- Ask to join
- Resident of Indiana (Minimum 6 months)
If you meet these requirements and are interested in joining the greatest and oldest fraternity in the world you first must petition a lodge for membership. A petition is an application of sorts, asking to join. The petition is reviewed by the lodge, and an investigating committee will be assigned to meet with you and determine if you are well qualified. This committee makes a recommendation to the Lodge, and all Masons must be elected by a unanimous vote to be accepted into the Lodge. The investigation and election process takes 1-2 months.
Once you have been elected, the next step is to begin the degree work. Your lodge will perform three degrees (initiation ceremonies) for your education and enjoyment. These ceremonies are very dignified and inspirational. At no time will horseplay or indignities enter into the program. These degrees are very solemn and Masons take the task of making Masons very seriously. This process would start with the Entered Apprentice degree and then move to the Fellow Craft degree and conclude with the Master Mason degree. The completion of the three degrees can take 3-6 months.
